Hunted

Previously on Star Trek Wayfarer:
Akeno slammed the hatch of the jeffries tube shut and slammed down the lock handle. She aimed her phaser and aimed it at the hatch edges. It spluttered and sparked. "Come on..." she muttered in frustration.
Bang. Bang. Scratch. Scratch. Akeno began to breathe heavily as she fumbled with the phaser. Eventually an orange beam erupted from the nozzle. Akeno aimed it at the edges, melting the metal together, sealing the hatch for good.
The banging and scratching continued. Akeno turned to the others. "We must be caught innsome sort of dampening field." She said. "We can't rely on phasers alone. We need other options." She pondered for a moment. "Regroup on deck nine. Lets secure the armoury and gear up. No doubt they're beaming onto every deck".
[Eclipse, the kids! Kahless, protect them!] Luna thought, genuine fear gripping her heart.
"Sir." The new Ops officer might have been less arrogant than the reputation of his people from a century before, but he was still quite bold. "Request permission to skip Deck 9 in favor of Decks 8 and 10. Deck 8 fore has the ODN trunk - the bioneural gelpacks have batteries for their life-support, I may be able to send an SOS burst to Starfleet. Deck 10 aft has the shuttlebay. If the auxiliary craft are still online, we'll be able to set up a comm net and engage emergency transporters for the wounded to bring them to Sickbay." He thought for a moment. "And, those are the two decks from which we can most effectively eject the intruders directly into space."
"Captain, the non-coms need protection. I...I." Luna was shaking now, the first time she had EVER allowed her raw, non-Klingon emotions to show anywhere other than a Holodeck program.
Akeno nodded. "One bridge at a time." She said through heavy breathing. She looked over at Luna. "Luna, gather who you can and protect the civilians. Your first area to secure should be the school room. Raelyn go with her." She then looked over at Gil'an and Mashiro. "You two get down to the shuttlebay. See if you can use one of the shuttles to get a message out. I'm going to get to the armoury, round up as many people as I can and secure Engineering. We can use Engineering as a base of operations."
"Make it fast people!" Akeno ordered.
And now the continuation...
[Deck Seven]
Elias got to the weapons locker, keying in his codes to unlock the doors before quickly getting in and closing the doors behind him. He took a moment to breath. He had heard the intruder alert alarms a moment later and the sounds of roars and screams of people running. Something didn't feel right to him as he opened up a locker. His Locker. The one he claimed when he came aboard to stow his gear.
His locker contained a full set of Special Forces Armor, well used and sturdy. A cuirass of protective ballistic rubber and leather with the Starfleet Delta on the left chest, subdued with the dark color of the armor. Vambraces and Shin armor. He quickly donned his armor in record time before withdrawing his Custom Stun Lance (based on the old MACO Shock baton but collapsible for easy carry and extendable to a locking Quarterstaff) . He checked the battery charge, twisting it for it to extend into the quarterstaff before he exited the armory locker and headed towards Engineering.
[School Room]
Eclipse and the others huddled in the dark in frightened silence, unsure of what would happen next. Some of the younger members began to sniffle, which Eclipse knew could lead to bigger trouble.
"Hey kids, let's play a game! Lady Luna and Captain Akeno need us to be very sneaky and very quiet to test how well their finding skills are. Whoever does the best, will get a big chocolate bar or favorite bag of candy! Everyone ready? Go!" Eclipse smiled as her plan worked and the little ones scattered around the room, moved anything solid into bunkers/forts, and used blankets to cover any light holes. The adults whispered their thanks, then went and hid either with the kids...(well tried to, the kids were quite competitive) or made their own hiding places. Eclipse nodded happily, then wriggled under a...well...Eclipse couldn't really tell what it was in the dark.
"Please be safe, Lady Luna." Eclipse whispered, burrowing deeper under the...whatever it was.
[Engineering]
The shimmer of green came nearly as expected by the door, two creatures that resembled dragonborn from her raising, but more feral with sharper teeth resolving and then bursting into motion instantly. Charlotte's mind burned in rage as she raised the phaser and triggered a shot. She triggered a shot. "Fuck me." She said as nothing came out of the phaser, tossing it to the side as one came directly for her. One hand reached for the old-fashioned pistol she'd had crafted for herself, but knew there wasn't enough time and instead grabbed the rapier and jerked it free, stepping to the side at the last moment after the tyrranid committed fully, driving the blade into it from the side, twisting and recovering as she spun with the movement of the creature.
The creature went down to the ground, already scrabbling to get up, but now Charlotte had time and the free hand went back for the pistol inside her open jacket and brought it up, aiming carefully at the second tyrannid, grappling with the phaser of one of her people in it's mouth. There were two big booms as the .45 caliber pistol bucked in Charlotte's hand and two holes sprouted from the side of the creature that she could see, the blood spray from the other side that painted the wall indicated that major damage had been done. She wasn't satisfied and there was a third 'BOOM' from the pistol, which carved a chunk out of the creature's head and it went down.
She spun on a heel and took aim at the other one before drawing her sword back and slashing it across the neck, opening it and dropping the dinosaur where it lay. More sounds came from outside the engineering doors, one being a scream that cut off suddenly. Charlotte cursed again and ran over to the door, triggering it to open, revealing three more of the creatures hunched over the form of a crewman in red, neck ruined in an unsurvivable way. Two rounds hit the center reptile before the gun dropped to the ground while she fumbled with one of the three pouches on her belt, "Computer emergency containment forcefield on the outside corridors, twenty meters." She commanded as the tyranids turned their attention to her, but she'd palmed a round sphere already and pressed one of the three buttons on it, then the other two simultaneously, "Vladar, trigger the door!" She tossed the crystal sphere hard at the opening as the doors started to snap closed in the face of the three dinosaurs, a glint of light inside it as if it were a star in a jar.
The doors closed and claws scrabbled on the door for four seconds until a 'Thump' was audible through it. Charlotte turned to walk away, pointing at two of the enlisted, "Move those corpses to the side, then grab a medkit, you're bleeding Walther." Her voice was a growl and she wiped her blade on her sleeve, "We're not done here, people, gimme the list of damage!"
Artemi Vladar gave a look at the door, "What about them out there?"
The look that Charlotte returned to him made him shiver, "There's nothing out there anymore, Artemi, nothing at all. Computer, drop corridor forcefields," There was a double beep of confirmation, "I hold the cosmos in my hand Artemi," She pulled out another of the crystal spheres with a sparkle of light on the inside, "Literally. Now, I want those shields rotating frequencies, I don't want any more transporter signatures on this ship, got it? Computer, seal the main engineering doors, authorization Avarice-Nineteen-Omega.”
Meanwhile in the Jeffries tubes:
Akeno nodded. "One bridge at a time." She said through heavy breathing. She looked over at Luna. "Luna, gather who you can and protect the civilians. Your first area to secure should be the school room. Raelyn go with her." She then looked over at Gil'an and Mashiro. "You two get down to the shuttlebay. See if you can use one of the shuttles to get a message out. I'm going to get to the armoury, round up as many people as I can and secure Engineering. We can use Engineering as a base of operations."
"Make it fast people!" Akeno ordered.
"On it," Mashiro nodded before glancing over at Gil'An. "Let's get a move on, Lieutenant."
"Aye, Captain...and thank you. Come on, Raelyn, we've got work to do." Luna'd regained her ice and fire, and woe-it-be to any Tyranian that walked in front of her! Luna moved through the Jefferies tubes like a wraith, silent...and deadly.
Haaktor nodded, his innate confidence boosted by the fact that his suggestions were being implemented. He double-checked the manual lock on the tube door, and began the crouching walk toward the next ladder junction. "If we can secure the ODN and EPS trunks on Deck 8, Engineering becomes more defensible." He thought for a moment, running through a list in his head of stores aboard in the second and third cargo bays, and was angry at himself that he couldn't recall the cargo manifest. Still, before getting to the ladder, he pulled out his tricorder and started scanning, checking for any of the reptilian intruders - or other lifeforms.
"Lets go," Akeno said. She gave each of them a nod.
[Deck Five]
Luna and Raelyn gathered ten crewmen from different departments, and found some weapons from quarters they were able to sneak into. Several Tyranian's fell to Luna's blades before they got to the school room's door.
Raelyn had downed a good amount of the Tyranians, as did the rest of the crewmen they had gathered. After seeing Luna's rampaged she quipped, "Lieutenant, please remind me to never get on the wrong side of your blade" she chuckled quietly, trying to lighten the mood. She got serious again as they found themselves in front of the door, which was sealed.
"Pfff! Thank you, Raelyn for the reminder to temper my fire with humor." Luna nodded her thanks before turning her attention to the door.
'Hm...blasting it open will not only scare the little ones, but make this place un-defensible. Could we force my blades through and 'pop the lock'?" Luna asked, not sure if that could be done.
[Deck Eight]
A deck above the Captain and the rest of the party, the Ops chief opened the Jeffries' tube hatch and peeked around the corner. Creeping forwards quietly, he closed the hatch, and found his way to the sealed door of the ship's data trunks. If the warp core was a ship's heart and the computer its brain, this was the spinal column, transmitting energy and data across the ship and supporting the network. He started to remove the manual override security panel and jerked his hand back at the feeling of an active electric field. Thinking while pressing his back to the door, watching for the intruders, he tapped on it and whispered harshly. "Open up, it's Haaktor."
After a moment, he heard a portable shield generator being powered down to minimum. Then, the door opened to a small smoke-filled room which looked like it had seen far better days. The dead body of one of the reptiles was there, burned to a crisp. Some of the Ops people were there - the few who were alive, at least. The door closed and the shield went back up.
There was only one word the Ops chief could say amidst the chaos. "Report, crewmen."
"Well, uh, this thing was one of the intruders on the deck. He got in here, and we opened the EPS tap as we ran to the closet to get the projector. We just got the tap closed a minute ago. We were hit with an EMP, but we've managed to make sure the EPS didn't go into a backflow, so far. I wouldn't push it though." One of the Ops team held up his gloved hands, obviously still usable, but he was afraid to remove the protective equipment.
Haaktor nodded as he tried to figure out their next steps. "Good job. If there's forward EPS pressure, the core is still functional, even if it's only in Gray Mode. The Captain's party is proceeding to Main Engineering. We're going to meet her as soon as we secure this room."
The junior crew breathed a sigh of relief as they heard a senior officer confirm their hopes. The Captain was alive and well, and Engineering was still under Starfleet control. Haaktor gestured around the room. "Get the ODN network online. If you have to, use a radio to the auxilliary craft to get processing online. I want a damage report and a commnet before we move out." He singled out one of the Enlisted men who looked most scared. "Petty - go into the equipment cache. We'll be leaving the shield generator here, but I want the plasma torches and hydrospanners - anything that'll keep working as a weapon if they hit us with another pulse. Get moving, people."
[Deck Nine]
Akeno's hands trembled as she opened the Jeffries tube hatch that led to deck nine. The corridors were dark, splatters of red, blue and green blood on the walls. Akeno could feel her heart pounding as she walked past the splatters, and the occasional phaser burn. She kept herself small, just in case the Tyranians were around the next bulkhead. She kept her eyes forward, trying to ignore the sight and small of blood, the only remains of the crew - her crew.
She knew that she needed to reach the armoury, no doubt that it would be a priority target for the Tyranians. After all they were hunters and if they could prevent their prey from fighting back, then they become easier to catch. She took a deep breath as she reached the junction that led to the corridor where the ships main armoury was located. With her back against the wall, she peered around the corner to peek around the corner. Instantly she pulled back returning to her position.
She couldn't help but feel a wave of horror and fear flood through her like a tidal wave. What she had seen in the split second of her peeking around the corner had hit her like a train. Three Tyranian's clad in armour. No weapons on them, each of them with huge claws extended. Leaning over the body of one two of her security officers. Akeno couldn't even recognise them as they were being ripped apart by the jaws of the Tyranians.
The sound and sight of them ripping into their flesh, eating them like untamed wild beasts, clearly enjoying the taste as they fed upon their victims. She dropped her phaser as one hand retracted to her stomach, the other to her mouth to prevent her lunch from reappearing. Her eyes opened wide as she couched down, the fear, the horror had paralysed her body, she had just witnessed not only the death of her crew... But how their lifeless bodies were now diminished to nothing but food.
[Engineering]
It wasn’t so much a barricade as a fortified position, made up of a handful of heavy equipment crates in a storage room with a door into Engineering, but it was better than nothing. The six crates, stacked two high in three different locations should at least break up any new invaders if they came in and two nervous engineers were on the lookout for fresh beamins.
“Vallance,” Charlotte pointed at a spot on Deck Seven, “Here’s where the batteries had the failure. I need you to take Jeffers, Wallenstein and Zivvy and get that fixed.” Her mind was already reeling at wondering which of them wouldn’t be coming back. Sending four people out for one repair was overkill, but they had to get the power back up and she didn’t know how long it would take for main power. The backup batteries had failed to activate to bring the ship back under control for the few hours they could. She highlighted a route that took them through the Jeffries Tubes, requiring the traversal of only one short hallway on foot to get into the room itself, “Good luck.”
The engineer swallowed hard, but gathered his team and popped open one of the access ways and left. Charlotte watched him briefly before moving back to the main console and the diagnostic that had been run on the quiescent reaction. That had been forty percent of her present people, another was dead, two were acting as guards, which left her and two others to solve the main problem.
The feed injectors were fine and thank God that the containment fields hadn’t gone down, but that and the spotty emergency lighting were the only things aside from the doors that seemed to be working. “Suppression, not disablement.” She whispered, “They’ve got a hardline into our systems, so they’re not worried about a transmission being cut off and us restoring power. But how did they may bypass the shields?” She spoke out loud to herself.
“I don’t know, ma’am.” A nervous Petty Officer responded, not knowing she wasn’t talking to him.
“Dampening field.” The answer flicked into Charlotte’s head and mouth simultaneously, “Localized or general? General. Weapon, knock our systems down, then second to effect a hardline connection, but how.. These aren’t the Breen..” The ship had shuddered from the impact on the shields, then everything had gone down. It had been that fast, then the invaders had come beaming in. In the chaos, the emergency lighting had partially come up, maybe twenty percent at most, not enough for humans to get more than shapes, but enough for things to see other things.
How it had happened now came to her, but the fact that the weapon used had used their own shields at strength to direct an EMP pulse inwards towards the ship to force a reset didn’t matter at the moment. She could reverse engineer that later at least on the theoretical stage, but where would they have installed the hardline connection? “Masters, do we have enough power to ping the ship’s junctions?”
“Not simultaneously, no.” The PO responded, “Five at a time.”
“Get started then, if something doesn’t bounce it back, or if there’s a delay, I need to know about it.
His jaw dropped, “There are over a thousand junctions! It’ll take hours!”
“Two thousand six hundred and fifty three, to be precise.” Charlotte growled back, “Then you’d better get started.”
[Sickbay]
Frankie had tied her hair back before the first casualties had started arriving, although several loose strands had already escaped and were sticking against the side of her face by the time she moved to the next biobed. Sickbay was busy without being overwhelmed, medical staff moving between patients while those waiting for treatment were assessed and directed according to need. Triage had been established near the doors almost instinctively, and Frankie had found herself slipping back into habits she had hoped would remain firmly in the past. Assess the injury. Decide who needed her now and who could safely wait. Move on. The difference was that this was not a field hospital and she wasn't trying to keep someone alive long enough to get them somewhere better. Here she had proper diagnostic equipment, surgical systems and regenerators, and enough time to do more than simply stabilise the damage. "Hold still for me," she said to the crewman on the biobed as she passed the regenerator over the torn flesh along his side, watching both the wound and the readings above him as damaged tissue slowly knitted itself back together. The initial scan had shown no penetration into the abdominal cavity, which had been the first thing she had needed to know, and the analgesic she had given him was already beginning to take effect. Frankie adjusted the setting on the regenerator before continuing, one hand resting briefly against his shoulder when he tensed. "Nearly there."
Even while she worked, Frankie remained aware of the rest of Sickbay around her. She glanced towards triage when another casualty was brought through the doors, listened as one of the nurses called out a set of readings from the next bed, and caught herself automatically counting how many biobeds were still available before turning her attention back to her patient. They were managing. For now, that was enough. She finished sealing the wound and reached for the tricorder to check her work, forcing herself not to think too far ahead as another distant impact seemed to travel through the deck beneath her feet. There were people between Sickbay and whatever had boarded the ship, and Frankie trusted them to do their jobs just as they trusted her to do hers. She still knew precisely where the phaser had been placed behind the main medical console. She hated that she knew, hated even more that some part of her had checked the moment the intruder alert sounded, but if anything came through those doors she had patients who could not run and staff whose attention was quite rightly on keeping them alive. Frankie closed the tricorder and looked towards the entrance as the Sickbay doors opened again.
[Deck Eight, ODN & EPS Trunk Room]
One of the junior crew spoke up hurriedly as he was working on the ODN console, restoring function as best he can. "Sir, we're receiving a ping from Main Engineering! I'm seeing four other points on the ODN net downstream as well!"
Haaktor nodded and smiled - no doubt, Engineering was reaching out as well. "Good. Step aside." He took over the panel and returned a pattern from the ping, sending text with it.
Deck Eight trunks secure. Restoring comm and EPS net, ETA unknown. Working on damage report. Captain en route to you with weapons. We'll be ready to move soon and will shield this room from inside. Destination Engineering or more urgent repair?
