2,237 words; about a 11 minute read

Mission: The Games
Location: Holodeck Two

Akeno had gathered the senior officer's, not in the conference room, but in holodeck two. She was wearing a loose t-shirt which she had knotted up to one side to expose her midriff and some red shorts. Her outfit was completed with running shoes. She held a PADD in her hand, reading her own orders as she paced.

"To the officers who received this message. Report to Holodeck Two at thirteen hundred hours. Wear clothing suitable for sports and exercise."

A few minutes after her orders had been sent out, the doors to holodeck two opened and Commander Munetani stepped inside. True to her killjoy fashion sense, she arrived sporting a red, oversized performance T-shirt (Starfleet issue, of course), and black, moisture-wicking running shorts. a pair of white crew socks and (mildly worn) Nike Glide running shoes completed the look.

"I have some concerns about this whole "competition" that the Lolrunians have organized, Captain," she remarked as she began to do some pre-workout stretches. "Barring the fact that the Lolrunians should've told us they were in talks with other galactic powers before we came here, why are we necessarily competing against the Klingons and the Romulans? Wouldn't it be wiser for us to negotiate a joint mining agreement and have us competing together against the Lolrunians?"

Mark entered the holodeck with a jumpsuit with Starfleet insigna. A pair of trainers and a perplexed look on his face.

Having heard Mashiro's last statements he chimed in

"I concur" he breathed "by considering the competitors, we won't have much of a chance in physiscal competitions. Klingons have by far superior strenght and endurance, as well as Romulans. And Orions are well known for their physical prowess and agility." he shrudded "I don't think we stand much of a chance to be honest" he explained.

"It's their way of doing things apparently..." Akeno replied a slightly nervous smile spreading across her face. "It was in the first contact brief... as a footnote really... I swear that I did read it..."

"Anyways. We need to put a team of twelve together. The Lolrunians have sent me a list of events and the rules." She added waving the PADD.

Patra read the message from her PaDD and smiled, "Well seems duty calls." to Lilith her old friend and sparring partner for Krav Maga. "Have to trot down to the Holodeck and see what the Captain wants."
"Yea, sure you do. You are just tired of me kicking your butt." replied Lilith. "Have fun." she said as she watched Patra turn and leave, while wiping the perspiration of her with her training towel.

Patra finished drying off the sweat and trotted down the passage ways. Arriving at Holodeck Two, she entered. She was wearing an almost see through, light pink Racerback Tank Top that allowed one to see the deep pink sports bra she wore; the tank top was drenched with sweat. She also had on a bright pink set of form fitting KMA Yoga Shorts. On her hands she wore a set of well worn pink Combat Sports Max Strike MMA Training Gloves, open palm fingerless gloves. Finally her feet wore clad in neon pink Adidas Women's Combat Speed 5 wrestling shoes. She took a sip from her water bottle as she dried some more sweat of herself. "You summoned me oh great and powerful Captain?" Patra said teasingly, a small smile touching her mouth. She quickly took in the others in the Holodeck, not caring in the least about what others thought of her outfit.

After settling Eclipes into her lessons, Luna changed into an iridescent green top with a purple skort, and headed down to the Holodeck.

"Greetings, everyone. Captain," Luna greeted cheerfully. Despite the situation the Wayfarer found herself in, Luna was excited to show her skill...and the prospect of kicking Orion butt was just the icing on the cake.

Akeno smiled. "I bet," she replied.

Once everyone had gathered, Akeno cleared her throat. "So as you all know we need to put together a team of twelve people for Twelve sporting events. So, this afternoon we'll be putting together that team and doing a crash training course!" She announced. "Here I have the list of events..."

She then began to read the events off. "So the events are:
- Grav-Sprint
- Aquatic Lane Dash
- Heavy Object Lift
- Vortex Disc Throw
- Combat Arena
- Arena Vault
- Precision Archery
- Wall Climb
- Stun Baton Duel
- Tri-Jump
- Ice Path Dash
- Shield Push "

After finishing the list Akeno took a breath. "I have all the rules here, and I'm going to admit. I'm not the sporty type. If there's anything I'm good at it's swimming." She told them all. "So, is there any of those calling out to any of you?" She asked opening the list up for discussion and any takers.

The doctor whistled as the captain finished the long list. "That's a long list, and quite a variety of sports too. " he pondered for a minute "The only sport I can feel comfortable is wall climbing whatever that means. I am a rock climber at heart so I guess I might do well, unless it means climbing on slippery walls while someone is trying to phaser you" he joked, hoping that was definitely not the case.

"According to this, the event us described as: 'Speed climb on a wall with shifting handholds and dynamic environmental simulation'," Akeno replied.

Mark shrugged. "No phasers....sounds good" he commented with a smirk.

"Aquatic lane dash..." Mashiro pondered as she read over the itinerary. "Would that be their equivalent of competitive swimming, by any chance? I was on the swim team back in the academy, so provided that the rules aren't too terribly different, I may inclined to compete in that."

"Seems like it. And the only thing I'm actually good at." Akeno reminded her with a slight 'puppy dog eye look'. "It says that the Aquatic Lane Dash is 'A fast-paced swim event in denser water, emphasizing breath control and propulsion.'," Akeno explained.

Mashiro stared back at Akeno with a look of mild complexion. "Why are you looking at me like that?"

"I suppose if you want to do that. I can try something else..." Akeno pouted.

Mashiro rolled her eyes and sighed. "Is this your indirect way of saying you want me to pick another sport, Captain?"

Akeno simply continued giving her puppy dog eyes and nodded a couple of times.

"Alright, fine," Mashiro grumbled. "Let's try... Grav-Sprint, I guess? Not sure what the hell that's supposed to be, though..."

Aleno smirked. "According to this, the Grav-Sprint is a sprint with various levels of gravity. So some parts are heavier than others."

Mashiro tilted her head to one side. "So, it's something like a marathon with gravity modulation?"

"Pretty much..." Akeno shrugged. "At least that's how I'm understanding it."

"Hm, archery. I've been pretty fair at that since I was young...and the Stun Baton Duel looks just about my speed," a grin wormed it's way across Luna's face.

"That seems like an intense one. It's described as a 1v1 bout using low-energy stun batons with tactical scoring zones." Akeno explained.

Luna smiled, her mind going back to all her sparing sessions with the many different teachers in her life.

"Then again, this is a Klingon you're talking to, Captain," Mashiro was quick to point out. "Combat, even of the athletic variety, is essentially a second nature to them."

"Good point!" Akeno grinned. She tapped on her PADD and a holographic Klingon appeared in a small circular ring in the corner of the holodeck. "The computer will explain the rules," she said to Luna. "Feel free to increase the difficulty if you'd like."

"Ha! Computer, make it as difficult as it'll go!" Luna cracked her knuckles, a wolfish smile on her face.

"If this is going where I think it's going, you guys may wanna step back," Mashiro sighed.

Patra smiled as she watched Luna. “So tell me what the Arena Vault and Ice Path Dash consist of? I have done some Parkour in my time and I grew up playing all kinds of winter sports and games.” Inquired Patra, as she slid her PaDD out from behind her and set it down, along with her water bottle and towel. "Could even try the Tri-Jump." stated Patra.

"Lets see..." Akeno said as she tapped through the PADD. "It says 'Triple-jump with motion-enhanced track and smart-grip footwear scoring sensors.' for the Tri-Jump. And for the Ice Dash it says 'Skating/sprint event over a semi-solid, ultra-slick synthetic ice with terrain shifts.'." Akeno looked up from her PADD. "Seems pretty basic, but I guess its about speed and skill."

[This is gonna be fun,] Luna thought as she stretched before walking over to the Klingon.

"Let's get started then!" Luna grinned like a shark as she settled into a fighting stance, holding the Stun Baton with one hand. After the Computer laid out the basics, the Klingon charged, and the battle began. Luna was on Cloud Nine being allowed to go full-throttle on an opponent, not something she'd allowed herself to indulge in for some time given her tendency to get a bit of blood lust from time to time.

Patra smiled, "Okay then, I'll take on the 'Triple-jump' and 'Ice Dash'. Should be fun and a good overall work out. Hell, most likely be the most amusing of the competitions, imagine a Klingon, Romulan, or Orion doing a triple jump or better yet on ice skates."

"Triple jump is pretty much what it says on the tin. Ice-Dash is a ice skating race essentially, but with obstacles in your way." Akeno explained as she read from the PADD.

Patra smiled “Okay then, let’s make this difficult. =^=Computer bring up a Lolrunian ice-dash course and add the triple jump to it.=^=.” Looking at the others she smiled “What, I am feeling rather frisky, been a long time since Starfleet Medical has allowed me to have fun since my ‘return from the dead’ act.”

"Ok, any other takers for the other events?" Akeno asked.

Patra replied with a smile as she was getting ready to try the Lolrunian ice-dash with the added triple jump to the program; “Pretty sure the good doctor would have a small coronary if I did any more events.”

The CMO shrugged while stretching in between of his climbing training.
"I guess all vessels do have that kind of crewmember that always have to be patched up by sickbay on a frequent basis...the Wayfarer is no exception"

Patra laughed at that as she began the modified ice-dash "You know you love to see me come to sickbay. Gives you a chance to check me out." As she began the course she was picking up speed, she went to start her first jump when the hurdle raised up an inch. What the F.... Patra began to think as she smashed into the hurdle and flipped end over end, landing hard on he back. She wheezed in a breath "Damn, that hurt." she croaked, as her eyes blurred with tears.

Luna wiped a trickle of blood from her busted lip, huffing softly as she was actually starting to sweat from every pour, which was causing the floor to become slick and footing unsure...making it all the more dangerous, and fun.

Patra laid on the very cold surface, trying to catch her breath. She was considering whether to inform doctor Johnson about the blurry vision, but decided against it. She would asses herself once she could breath normally and decide then.

Patra finally caught her breath, but the blurry vision was still present. "Ahh doc, remember when you said to tell you if I felt funny or anything weird? Well, seems I have some blurry vision with some spooky shadows in the corner of my eyes."
Patra thought about what she had just said, "Ahh nevermind doc. I think everything is good." With that statement she git up and began to try again.

[Several hours later]

Akeno stood dripping wet by the side of the pool. They had all been training hard for their events. She looked around at them all and smiled, even if this was a mission it was actually turning into something fun.

"OK everyone." She shouted out clapping her hands together. "That's enough for today. Get some rest. We have to do our best tomorrow to win these events." She told them. "I'll see you all tomorrow. But for now, rest up and be ready to kick some ass tomorrow!"

"And here I was just getting warmed up," Luna panted. Luna was covered in blood, sweat and mud, making her look for all the world like a Wrathin Mud Creton.

Hoo, boy," Mashiro gasped as she plopped down on the floor. "This whole "running in variable gravity" thing is a lot harder than it looks..."

"Well, don't overdo it! You can stay if you really want. But, a good athlete makes the time for rest." Akeno told them all. With that said she turned and headed towards the holodeck doors. "Oh and guys... Let's win this shall we?"

To be continued...
