Mission: The Games

"We're a third of the way through our competition! Let's have a quick look at the scores! The announcer said. The huge viewscreens and the ones in the teams shelters changed. Each team represented by their government logo, the seal of the UFP, The Klingon Empire Symbol, The Romulan Empire Logo and the Orions seal.

"Currently in the lead with six point is The Federation! In second place with four points ard the Klimgoms! Next with three poimts each are The Romulans and Orions tied for third!"

"With that out of the way. Event four is beginning!" The announcer told the crowd. "Its the Vortex Disc Throw! Let's see how far our competitors can throw those discs! The rules are simple. Each competitor throws three discs one at a time, the furthest thrown wins the most points! Those discs are no ordinary discs though, they all vary in weight and balance! So each will react differently in the air! They must land within the area to qualify though!"

Once again Akeno turned to her crew as the arena changed into a field that resembled an Earth shot-put field with a center mound and measurement lines scanning out. A wrack of disks also appeared, four sets of three flat discs with each set being a different colour. Blue for Federation, Red for Klingon, Green for Romulan and Yellow for the Orions.

"OK, who's up?" Akeno asked.

Kothon smiled a Klingon smile, ready to do in anyone that stood in his way.

Luna leaned against the wall, feeling the tension running rampant through the entire stadium.

Mark analyzed the situation with his scientific mind.

"Captain, I'm probably not the strongest of the men here but I guess we can make up with some tactics. If the discs are not all alike and react differently in the air, we might play with trajectories and skew-throws" he explained "I guess Klingons will just go for brute force" he whisphered.

"This is true, but you still gotta watch them. Then there's the sleezy Orions and the Romulans." Luna warned, keeping her voice low.

"It takes more than strength to win at stuff like this," Akeno smiled. "Can you get us some points at least?" She asked the doctor. "If we can't win, let's aim for second. Build up the point bank."

A smile showed up on Mark's face "Sure enough, captain" he warned up his shoulders and arms "I won't be able to win this one but might at least not score last" he grinned.

"Ah, you got this Markster! You just gotta hang loose!" Luna snagged a passing vendor and, after paying, popped some fried Zelclumian Squid into her mouth.

"WHEWY! They like these things HOT!" Luna laughed, flapping her hand in front of her mouth in exaggeration.

"Careful with the food," Akeno said. She turned to Mark. "Just go do your best, at least score points. We're in this for the long run."

"Aye aye, Akeno Makeno!" Luna giggled, starting to have fun.

Mark warmed up his shoulders, the last thing he wanted was to get injured during the throw.

As his turn approached, he gathered the vortex and weighted that object in his hands. It was somewhat heavy but way less he anticipated. The shape was similar to a rocket.

He closed in towards the launching pad and as the referee allowed him to throw, he launched the vortex with a clean release. it rose in a smooth arc, spinning tightly as it caught the wind. For a moment it felt perfect, slicing through the air with that satisfying whistle. Then the nose dipped slightly, and it began to lose height earlier than the doctor hoped, gliding out to a decent but not standout distance. A solid throw with good form and flight, just shy of the power or angle needed for a great score.

He turned towards the captani and commented "Guess it could have been better...but also worse" as he gathered back with the Wayfarer's crew waiting for the competitors to do their showings.

Kothon stepped up and launched the vortex, dropping it farther than the Doctor's.

"And that's how it's done." Kothon smirked, purposefully bumping into the Doctor.

"Apologies, now." Luna's voice was ice cold.

"And what'll you do to me if I don't, Halfing?" Kothon growled, his eyes narrowing sharply. Luna bristled, fire flickering deep in her eyes.

"Ignore me and find out!" Luna snarled, her hands curling into fists.

"Why don't we settle this afterwards? That way, EVERYONE can see how worthless and weak you are." Kothon smirked, his eyes glinting greedily. Krotos stood in the background, wondering how things would play out.

"I've already got a dance partner after the games, so you'll just have to wait your turn." Luna's voice was sickly sweet.

"You little...!" Kothon took three steps toward Luna before Krotos made a motion with his hand.

"Thats enough both of you!" Akeno warned sharply, her sudden Captain tone coming into play. It wasn't often, but it was enough to get them to back down.

Luna took a calming breath and stepped back, her eyes still smoldering at the way her crew was being treated, but knowing here was neither the time nor the place for such things.

Krotos spoke softly to Kothon, exacting an exasperated snarl before Kothon stomped off.

The Romulan then stepped upto the mound and took the green disc. He seemed to examine it closely before launching it high into the air. It swirled and darted through the air with strange grace. The crowd watched in awe as it flew farther than the Federation and Klingon discs, finally coming to land on the ground.

"As to be expected..." Akeno sighed. "Romulans have natural strength, so he used that to get ahead in the competition." she explained. She had expected this, especially in the strength competitions. In these it wasn't a matter of skill, it was a matter of pure strength and biology.

The Romulan nodded as if satisfied before turning on a heel and walking off towards the Romulan crew on the other side of the stadium.

Next up a beefy looking Orion walked upto the mound. He picked up his discs and with what seemed brute strength launched them into the air. Unfortunately for him, they landed short of Marks, one of them only a few inches away from his furthest one. He seemed a little frustrated at the fact that he couldn't get them further.

"Looks like we didn't come last at least," Akeno commented. "Although I do feel sorry for the Orions..." she sighed.

"AND THE SCORES ARE IN!" the announcers voice boomed.

"Winner if The Romulan Star Empire! In Second, The Klingon Empire! In Third, The Federation and in Fourth, The Orions!"

"Third's not bad...not GOOD but not BAD either," Luna chuckled, trying to bolster moral.

The Competition Continues...
