A Brush With Death (Part 1)

Posted on Wed Nov 20th, 2024 @ 11:46pm by Captain Akeno Misaki & Commander Mashiro Munetani "Shiro" & Lieutenant Commander Mark Johnson

Mission: Return to Tyra
Location: Sickbay, Deck 5
Timeline: Immediately After "Delecita Asperalda"

Sickbay was filled by the sound of the transporter as an unconscious, heavily wounded Akeno was beamed directly onto the surgical bed. The knife still prptruded from her stomach as she took form and blood was still pooling out of her. It was now a race of time to save her!

Mark was busy fixing a broken bone of an engineering officer laying on biobed number 2 when the hum of the n-th emergency sickbay transport caught his attention. Since the start of this shift and the jailbreak of Jem'Hadar's, sickbay has been a battleground. Technically speaking not a real battleground since the area was pretty much still a safe zone with respect to the rest of the ship, but wounded kept ammassing and the medical personnel was not able to keep up with the speed at which the rest of the crew required medical assistance.

As the tired doctor turned towards the latest transported body, he immediately recognized the captain laying on the surgery bed. His eyes widened.

"Lara take over here" he yelled to the closest doctor while he moved quickly towards the captain.

"Molly" he shouted "Need your help here" as he studied the situation trying to understand how to proceed.
"Full body RX, and general scans, need to know how extended the damage is" he ordered to the chief nurse while looking for a bag of blood the same type as the Captain's.
"Oh my..." Molly exclaimed as soon as she noticed it was the Captain
"Molly, focused, full body RX and general scans...NOW" he repeated his orders awaiting for the much needed results.

Akeno was losing a lot of blood, and her blood pressure was dropping rapidly. The wound was deep in her stomach. It was now a race against time to save her from dying there on the table.

“Doctor, her neural activity is dropping. Life signs getting weaker and weaker!” Molly’s voice cracked as she monitored the readings of the scans. “Multiple tissue damages, heavy pulmonary hemorrhages” she read back to Mark her findings.

“Got it” the CMO reacted to the information flowing in by acknowledging them and registering them mentally while trying to find out the best way to proceed.

“We will have to remove the knife from the captain’s stomach, then we need to hurry up and patch up the main damage. We’ll work on the regeneration of the tissue after that. We need to be prepared for further pulmonary effusions and drain them” he explained step by step the phases of the surgery to his team so that everyone would have been aware of the various tools needed and upcoming challenges.

Molly nodded and closed in to the doctor to receive orders and to be close to him to pass him tools. Mark took a deep breath and, with steady hands, took the heavy knife out of the Captain’s belly.

“Quick, drain the blood I can’t see anything” he ordered the nurse as he got rid of the knife and the blood started pumping out in a much greater quantity.

As Molly cleared out and drained most of the blood, Mark could better spot the liver’s damage where the blood was coming out. He immediately started repairing it trying to stop the bleeding.

The team moved like clockwork under the CMO’s guidance. Mark’s fingers danced with expertise over the Captain’s body, guiding micro-sutures to mend ruptured vessels. Akeno’s breathing faltered, and alarms screamed.

“Neural failure!” Molly cried.

Doctor Johnson’s head darted over the monitor to have a better grasp of the salutation. “Administer 20 milligrams of cordrazine. Recalibrate the cortical stimulator to 0.8 Tesla.”

As the head nurse followed her commands, Akeno’s heartbeat started to come back and steadying.

A couple of hours later, the surgery was complete. Mark peeled off his gloves, exhausted. His medical goon, once immaculate white, was not patched with bloody red. Captain Misaki laid unconscious but alive, her color slowly returning.

“Well done, Molly” Mark vocalized while still trying to catch his breath. “The next few hours will be vital for her survival. Get someone to keep her monitored. If anything arises, have me called.” He looked at her tired and scared face “Get some rest now”.

Molly simply nodded; her eyes still glued on the captain’s body. She then ordered a nurse to sit close to the captain and to keep monitoring her, as the doctor requested.

The tired doctor threw his goon away and carefully washed his hands.

“If anything happens, I’ll be in my office drafting a report to the XO” he muttered as everyone was still busy with wounded colleagues but the situation was now under control.
