The Right Choice?

In The Beginning...

"I told you not to join up, mija," her dad said before taking drink of his beer. "Of course you didn't listen to me."
"And just where did I get that from?" Nyysa asked with a smile.
"No idea," he told her.
"Uh huh.' Nyysa chuckled. "There was a war coming and I thought I could help. And I did help."
While the Federation's war with the Dominion was officially declared in 2373, a cold war had been going on since at least 2370. That's when one of her close friends, Lahey, was killed on the USS Odyssey by the Jem'Hadar during a resuce mission. Sure, the fleet was mum about it to the general public, but that wormhole over Bajor meant that the science community, especially physicists, were already paying attention to that region of space.
Joining Starfleet seemed impulsive to most people, and it might've been, but someone had to finish Lahey's work and the civilians were quietly being moved out of that region of space.
Enrique sighed. "War's over."
"For now," she muttered. The pair shared a thoughtful look. "Something doesn't feel right about all this, papa."
Ever since she got her orders to the USS Wayfarer, Nyysa couldn't shake the feeling that she was missing something. There had to be someone better to be the Chief Science Officer of the brand new ship. She's brilliant and dedicated, but not necessarily the most cooperative or collaborative of people. She was also a new officer compared to the rest of the ship's senior officers. If she was a betting woman, she could almost guarantee that there was some lieutenant commander pissed as hell at being passed over for the job that Nyysa didn't exactly want.
"Then figure out why. Thats what you do; make sense of things that don't make sense." Her dad reached over and took her hand. "Just, you know, be careful."
"Careful? Pots and kettles, old man."
