Breakthrough!

Mission:
Return to Tyra
Location: Captains Ready Room
Akeno had woken up early and had been in her ready room since before the start of shift. Technically she didn't need to be on the bridge at the moment and was happily sat on the couches drinking her second cup of coffee. A single plate with a half eaten slice of toast sat on the coffee table as she sipped from her cup whilst going over the latest departmental reports on a PADD.
Doctor Johnson walked his way towards the CO’s ready room. Unshaved face, tired red eyes and untidy uniform…but he was somewhat happy. He moved slowly along the corridor with his data PADD in his hands. Stopped for a fraction of second in front of the ready room door and made his presence aware to the captain.
The door opened at Akeno stood there, choosing to answer the door manually. Her uniform tunic was unzipped and she had yet to put her hair up in her signature twintails. "Doctor. Early start? Or..." she looked him up and down "all nighter?"
Mark smiled shyly.
"Depends what day we are considering for the all nighter definition" he chuckled briefly before continuing.
"Aside from me being not really up to Starfleet code with respect to uniform and appearance, I got great news" his face lit in a bright smile.
"Thanks to the possibility of studying jem'hadar's physiology, I gathered information of paramount importance. Something I guess anyone in the entire universe ever managed"
"Well," Akeno smiled. "Join me for more coffee and fill me in?" She asked offering for him to step into the ready room.
The tired doctor eagerly joined the CO into her ready room. In front of a well needed cup of coffee, Mark started to explain her what he found.
From the data PADD he was holding he showed her a few chemical formulas and recovered data.
“Me and the team managed to synthetize a version of White that was 70% correspondent to the original product. We missed one of the key ingredients though, a trinucleic fungi that happens to grow specifically in Kabrel I.” he sipped quickly from his mug.
“This system is on the border between Federation and Cardassia. There is pretty much nothing in it except for these fungi and few more species. At first we tought that fungi in general were an answer to the synthetization of the White but that didn’t turn out to be the case.
Analyzing the Jem’Hadars we found out a specific series of proteins and enzymes that are not usually found in bodies. Fungies are exceptional enzyme receptors and that’s probably the secret ingredients. This particular set on enzymes that, I admit, I’ve never seen in any textbook.”
A spiraling set of apparently randomic strings and filaments appeared in the doctor’s PADD.
“This” he pointed at it “is the key of Ketracel-White!” he exclaimed with pride in his voice.
It was safe to say that what the doctor had just explained made little to no sense to poor tired Akeno. "Biology was never my strongest subject Mark..." she admitted with a nervous smile. "So, what you're essentially telling me is that you found a way to make something comparable to the drug?"
Mark smiled "What I'm saying is that with this enzyme, we can pretty much make THE drug...or something close to it at the 99% of confidence level" he smiled looking at the captain face.
"How long do you need to get this synthetized?" Akeno asked.
The doctor laid down the PADD on the table and reached his pocket with the right hand. A proud smile still showing on his face as he drew a hypospray out of it.
“We already did that” he exclaimed “…although, it’s just a small quantity…a sample we can call it. We need a bit more time to produce enough to get our friends happy for a while. But at least, it’s a starter. You know, we would also like to…ehm…test it out on our guests.”
“Not that I’m treating them as guinea pigs” he immediately clarified “Just to be sure it is working 100% also in real world and not just in well thoughts simulations”.
It was a hard decision to make, but Akeno knew that this was her call. "Do it of you need to." She said. "Oh and doctor, may I suggest you get some sleep. Or perhaps a nap at some point today..."
Mark smiled politely.
"I will get the lab to process more White... and after I'll give that order, I'll get to my bunk" he rubbed his tired eyes "After we'll have a few more, I'll provide it to one of our guests and analyze the result. I am pretty much confident it will be good enough".
The young captain nodded. "Ok doctor." She told him softly. "Thank you for your hard work. I'm sure it'll all pay off. I'll let you get back to it. I'll inform the Jem'Hadar first later this morning on our progress."
The doctor stood up and nodded full of pride. "Thank you captain, the lab will get the doses ready for tomorrow morning". Said so, he left.
