Going in the wrong direction

Avery was working off of about 2 hours of sleep and wasn't looking her best. She was buried so deep in ship upgrade reports that she didn’t realize who had just walked up to her station in engineering. That morning in the mission briefing, it was announced that they would be entering a nebula rife with electromagnetic interference and she was determined to put the ship in the best possible shape she could before arriving.

Normally, Avery loved to meet new people, and being new to the ship she was eager to make friends. However, with so much at stake and so little time, she was more annoyed than excited when the stocky, grey haired man approached. She shook her head slightly and sighed before turning towards the unnamed figure, “How can I help you?....sir!” Adding the sir and straightening her posture as she realized it was the XO standing in front of her. Internally kicking herself for allowing her work to get in the way of proper protocol.

"Good afternoon Lieutenant. The Captain has requested an update on you and your engineering team and whether were are ready for the mission in the Rolor Nebula?".

There was a momentary pause as the words filtered into Avery's sleep starved brain........."Yes sir, the ships engines and systems are operating within normal parameters. I still have some reports to read and sign off" motioning to the PADD's, "but we are looking good to go sir".

The XO mentally assessed her well being. "I hope so Lieutenant, for your sake". Sito leaned in closer at the unfiled reports scattered near the engineers console. He spoke quietly. "The Captain needs all his people in tip top shape. If you have a problem and are not up to the job as Chief Engineer, say now and we will replace you with someone who can? Do I make myself clear Lieutenant Paxton?".

"Aye, aye sir" she replied automatically.

"I want these reports completed and on my desk by 12:00 hours tomorrow. No excuses!".

The bearded XO looked Avery in the eyes =/\= Lt. Paxton will be coming to see you shortly Doctor, please check she is fit for active service on the Wayfarer and report to me as soon as the tests are concluded. Sito out =/\=

"12:00 hours Lt. Paxton". Commander Sito had made his request. He turned, and headed out of Engineering.

Avery was livid. “Say now and we will replace you with someone who can,” she mockingly repeated the XO’s statement under her breath. Duty always came first for Avery and she had been working tirelessly to make sure every possible upgrade and precaution was being implemented, but now, somehow, she was in trouble for just that.

She turned slightly to make sure her superior officer had left. "What an ass!" she muttered quietly.
