Getting checked out

Posted on Mon Mar 14th, 2022 @ 3:47am by Captain Akeno Misaki & Lieutenant Commander Mark Johnson

Mission: Arista
Location: Sickbay

Akeno made her way down to the ships sickbay. She wanted to get a once over, especially after what had happened with her only a few days earlier with Junior. She wasn't sure if her new Chief Medical Officer had been briefed on what has transpired, however now she could fill him in and get to meet him properly.

Stepping into the sickbay, the Intrepid class medical facilities were highly advanced and well equipped. "You in here doctor?" She asked outloud.

Mark was busy double checking recently loaded supplies. Over his uniform he was wearing a white doctors' coat with "Dr. M. W. Johnson" embroided in it. His attention got caught by the female voice looking for him.

"Yes, I'm here" he answered while reaching for the sickbay's entrance.

As soon as he noticed the captain he snapped on the attention
"Good morning, captain, may I help you?" he asked.

She walked over to him. "Yeah. I was hoping to check up with you regarding my history here. Have you been briefed on prior events to your arrival?" She asked.

“Oh” he started “well, not really, ma'am. I've been busy making sure we had all the medical supplies we could need before the ship departed for the J75-X system. I was just reviewing the inventory and getting accustomed on its dispsition right now.” he motioned towards a biobed waving to the captain to follow him.

“Please, get into the biobed and tell me what I should have been briefed upon” he said while recalling from the system her medical records and listening to her debrief.

Akeno made her way to the biobed and hopped up. "Long story short, a non-corporeal being invaded my body in a nebula we were charting. From what I understand this being, whom named himself 'Junior' was attempting to escape that environment" she paused. "It did so by hiding inside one of my egg cells, resulting in a rapid pregnancy. The foetus turned out to be a perfect clone of myself, in which Junior could 'inhabit' and possess a physical form" she paused and took a breath.

"However, after twenty four hours, it was equivalent to eight to nine months. Junior somehow managed to take control of my full body functions and attempted to take the Wayfarer. Junior seemed revenge on those who imprisoned him. After being stopped, Junior forced me to give birth to the fully grown baby" she stopped a moment and ran a hand over her belly. "The baby did not last long as the entity was incompatible with Human physiology and brain layout. The baby disappeared as if it had evaporated, we believe Junior couldn't exist outside the Mebulas environment"

Akeno took a deep breath. "It's still rather vivid in my mind at the moment. I was advised to check up weekly to ensure there are no lasting effects on my body from the rapid pregnancy... Well, internally anyways. Externally I still have baby fat and my belly button still sticks out a bit" she told him with a slightly nervous laugh, it was obvious it seemed embarrassing to her.

Mark’s eyes widened at the Captain’s story. He didn’t say much and kept tapping on his data PaDD a few notes recalling the needed information from the main computer of the ship.

“I see” he commented while starting a full body scan. “You seem to be physically fit, I would have never said you had been pregnant at a first glance” he tried to reassure her while peeking at the results of the body scan.

“Life parameters seem to be within the norm for a woman your age, there are no detectable injuries or lacerations to your internal organs.” he explained. Did you take any medicine after the pregnancy was over? Did you or do you experience anything different with your body after such a …singular…occurrence?” he asked.

“You know”he breathed deeply before continuing “I don’t think internal damages might be the real issue here.I think the situation has been more of a burden from a psychological point of view. I am no psychologist but being pregnant, and giving birth, often puts a huge burden on the woman. A normal human pregnancy usually takes around nine months to complete and those are, with ups and downs…” he smiled “…difficult times.” He started walking around the biobed and taking more readings while talking

“The body and the mind get accustomed to the idea of giving birth to a new life. It’s a long process. On the contrary you only had twenty-four hours to get your body…and mind…ready for it” he stopped and stared at her. “How do you feel?” he asked.

She pondered for a moment. "At the start of it all. I felt violated" she told him. "But after the actual birth, I actually..." she hesitated slightly. "I actually felt like I could be a mother to junior. I didn't want the baby to die..." she looked down. "But now, I feel OK. I know it wasn't really my child, but it allowed that entity to finally escape and realise that for a moment, it wasn't alone"

He nodded slightly while registering the last scan.

"Well, you are healthy" he told her in a calm and reassuring voice showing off a smile "you can get off the biobed" he concluded finalizing the checkup report and signing it off in his data PADD.

"I won't give you a medical advice ...but a friendly suggestion" he smiled to her once the visit was over "If you are not already doing so, I would suggest you to get to speak with the ship's counsellor about this occurrence...even if now all is OK" he let go a wistful smile.

"Lets say I have some ...experience...with telling the others, and myself, I feel OK" he closed in to one of the desks in the medical bay and dropped the PADD over it, to then put his hands into the pockets of his medical coat before continuing "Sometimes it's good to chat a bit with someone about how we really feel. Even a Captain should do it" he concluded smiling.

Sliding down off the biobed Akeno simply smiled at the doctor. "I'll be meeting with the counselor soon. Apart from this..." she said changing the subject. "How are you settling in on the Wayfarer?"

He smiled back crossing his arms on his chest. “It’s going pretty well…I just started poking around and getting to know the people. The Wayfarer is a fine ship, much more modern and well equipped than the previous postings I’ve been on.” a grin appeared on his face.

“I met the assistant CMO the other day, I’ll rely on him a lot in this first period, I guess. It is good to have someone that already knows the ship’s personnel and their medical history. Medical files are often accurate and complete but, a lot of minor things in the patient history is left out and even small things can be relevant sometimes.”

He sighted “Do you have any suggestions or something I should keep an eye on? And…” he paused for a while pondering “I got another question for you: what do you expect from this mission?” he concluded watching her.

Akeno pondered for a moment. "I can't really think of anyone in particular. As for the mission, I don't know. We're out here to explore, it makes a big change to fighting for our survival against the Dominion" she gave him a small smile. "We'll soon know what's out there once we get closer i suspect"

At the captain's remark on the fighting for survival, the doctor nodded while his mind raced through the previous years happenings. He automatically massaged his left shoulder where the scars still remains while overthinking before forcing himself to focus back on the situation at hand.

"I see" he finally said trying to show a timid smile "I guess time will tell" he concluded.

"Indeed. At least we have peace back" Akeno replied. "Do you need me for anything else doctor?" She asked.

"No ma'am" he promptly answered. "You? Well, if anything you know where to find me" he concluded smiling.

Akeno nodded. "Thanks Doc" she said as she made towards the door and walking out into the corridor.
