Mission: The Avenger
Location: USS Wayfarer
Timeline: Present

:OFF:

I’m just going to start moving things forward slightly, in the interest of actually getting to the Avenger (or not! Ha!).

:ON:

The Intrepid-Class USS Wayfarer dropped out of warp speed roughly half a million kilometres from the Rolor Nebula. Captain Meezo ordered helm to come to a full stop so that scans could be initiated.

“I want a full analysis of the nebula as best as you can,” Meezo directed his order towards both the operations station and the science station. “I realise our scans won’t penetrate much further than a 100 metres or so, but none-the-less, let’s not take any unnecessary risks.”

Before any scans could be done however, a Nerok-class Cardassian scout ship shot out of warp, and came to a stop parallel to the Wayfarer’s position, totally surprising the Starfleet vessel.

“Sir, we’re being hailed.” O’Donnell informed the Captain, her Irish accent sounding more pronounced somehow.

Meezo stood up a little taller and straightened his tunic, tugging it downward slightly. “I’ll have them on-screen, Lieutenant.” He knew this scout ship was no match for the Wayfarer, so felt confident that they couldn’t possibly be looking for a conflict of any kind.

The image of a middle-aged Cardassian male appeared on the viewscreen, his grey coloured boney ridges and protrusions highlighted by the low lighting on his ship. “My name is Gul Kulinor of the Cardassian scout ship ‘Bruja’, can we be of any assistance to you Captain...?”

Mike cleared his throat. He was about to say the words he had dreamed of saying for many years, “I’m Captain Michael Meezo of the Federation starship Wayfarer.” He tugged on his tunic again and broadened his shoulders, “I appreciate the offer, Gul Kulinor, but we are simply here to examine the nebula. Nothing more.”

“I see,” the Cardassian raised an eyebrow, “I know of at least two Federation science vessels who have entered this sector of space within the last few weeks, but I didn’t realise Starfleet would be sending an Intrepid-Class ship to do scientific studies. How strange.”

Mike’s face remained poker-like. “I know as much as you do I’m afraid. Our orders are to simply to study the nebula, catalogue its components, and that’s it.” The Captain paused for a moment, “Considering the losses the Cardassians took at the end of the Dominion War last year, perhaps it is us who should be asking you if you need any assistance, Gul Kulinor?”

“Cardassia Prime is practically full of Starfleet and Klingon personnel already.” the Gul replied bitterly. The disgust was fully evident on his face. “I respectfully decline your offer.”

Meezo nodded, “Then I bid you good day sir. We have a lot of ground to cover within the nebula, and very little time to be standing here talking like this.” Mike turned his head and nodded towards O’Donnell. She understood his non-verbal communication, and terminated the communication link.

Mike returned to the command chair and got comfortable. “What are we going to do now?” Sito whispered towards his commanding officer.

“We’re going to go into the nebula.” The Captain shrugged. “I highly doubt that the Cardassians would attempt to stop us. Their government is in ashes, their economy has collapsed, and most of their fleet was wiped out in the war. I bet that rust-bucket out there is now considered to be their flagship!”

Mike turned and announced loudly towards helm, “Reynolds, take us into the nebula, one-half impulse.” The man held his breath to see whether his gamble with the Cardassian scout ship would pay off or not. Thankfully, as the Wayfarer entered the nebula, the Cardassian ship moved away, before jumping to warp.
