Ensign Tyvok sat at his station, sipping his tea. On the screen in front of him was his mother, Lady T'Pren.
"Is father well?" Tyvok said, emotionless.
"Yes. He is still disappointed in your choice to join Starfleet rather than attending the Vulcan Science Academy." the woman replied.
"I... miss him. I wish he would speak with me."
T'Pren let out a bit of breath, almost a sigh, a rare lapse in emotional control. "He's just not ready yet. You know that he never held Starfleet in high esteem."
"Yes, I'm aware. But I do. And I am... content here. The humans don't ostracize me for my condition. They actually find me quite agreeable. I believe many Vulcans could learn many things from the Humans."
T'Pren looked away, and back at the screen. "You know your father would not find that line of thought agreeable."
Interference started distorting the image, likely due to interference from the nebula. "I'm losing the connection. Live long and prosper, mother." Tyvok held up the customary salute.
Through the static, T'Pren returned the salute, "Peace and long life, my so-" and the transmission was cut.
Tyvok went back to what he had been working on before the transmission. Some crewmember had gotten ahold of a black market copy of the "Vulcan Love Slave" holo-program, and loaded it onto the ship's computer. It contained a trojan horse, and was beginning to infect other ship's systems.
"Computer, please isolate data array Tango-226, and remove from the network." While it made no difference, Tyvok always used pleasantries when addressing the computer.
The computer beeped in acknowledgement, and then e6ntire rack of isolinear drives were physically severed from the ship's network. Tyvok made a note in his logs to head down to the computer core later and pull and replace those drives.
Tyvok looked down as his tea, and thought about the discussion he had with his mother, and how he believed Vulcans had a lot to learn from Humans.
He stood up and walked to the replicator. "Computer, I would like a root beer float, please."
