{USS Wayfarer; Prior to her launch}

Avery was used to moving from starship to starship (being a Marine’s daughter she never had much choice in that), but today was different. Today she was taking a new post as the USS Wayfarer’s Chief Engineer. She had learned from her father how to keep an outwardly cool, calm and confident demeanor, but on the inside it felt like her heart was beating a million miles an hour. What would the Captain be like? What would the crew be like? And most importantly now, what would her new engines be like? Were just a few of the questions rapidly running through her mind as she approached the Captain’s office. She took a deep breath, mustered up all of her confidence and pressed the chime next to the door.

The doors to the Captain’s office opened a moment later and Avery walked into the room, stopping to stand at attention a few paces from his desk. “Lieutenant Avery Paxton III reporting for duty, sir.” She stated with military-like precision, hoping that it would make for a good first impression.

Mike lowered the PADD that he was currently reading, and placed it carefully down on his desk. The personnel PADDs had been piling up today, and his head was starting to hurt already from all the new faces he’d seen today. In the imaginary ‘seen’ pile of PADDs he counted seventeen. In the ‘yet to be seen’ pile there were approximately another fifty or sixty PADDs. He inwardly groaned before getting to his feet and smiling.

“Lieutenant Paxton, welcome aboard the Wayfarer, I was just reading your personnel file.” Mile reached out a hand, which the engineer shook. Mike pointed towards one of the chairs which were placed in front of his desk, encouraging the woman to sit.

“I’ve got to say, I’ve been reading some pretty impressive stuff here.” He picked up the PADD again and started to skim-read aloud, “The Equinox... The Midway... both fine ships.” He placed the PADD down and his gaze returned towards his new CEO, “I assume you’re well versed with the Wayfarer’s main engineering design and specifications? Not to mention its bio-neural circuitry which replaced the more traditional isolinear circuitry?”

Avery took a seat as offered. Was it just her, or did he seem tired? She pushed the thought aside instantly as the Captain mentioned engineering design and specs. Avery could talk for hours about propulsion systems, circuitry, warp theory, just about anything engineering related.

“Yes sir, class 9 warp drive with a tricyclic input manifold. Maximum output of four thousand teradynes per second. Top sustainable cruise velocity of warp factor 9.975.” She took another breath to keep going, and then glanced at his desk. He did seem tired, and with that many personnel PADDs piled on his desk she didn’t blame him. Avery let that breath go, “...but you don’t need to hear me spout me off specifications that you already know about your own ship. Besides,” she said, casually motioning to the pile on his desk, “it looks like you have plenty of data to go through yourself.”

Avery stood up, determined not to waste more of his time. “Is there anything else you need from me to consider my in processing for the Wayfarer complete?”

Mike smiled at his Chief Engineering Officer. This was clearly an officer who cared about her role, and was obviously knowledgable about the finer technical details of a ship’s engines and inner workings. He felt safe knowing she was in charge down there. A wave of relief washed over him. “That’ll be all Lieutenant, thank you for taking the time to come and introduce yourself to me. Dismissed.” As the woman started to leave the ready room, Mike called out, stopping the engineer in her tracks, “One bit of advice though, Lieutenant. Keep the Wayfarer happy, and you’ll keep me happy.” Avery smiled and nodded before leaving the room.
