Personality & Traits

General Overview Manolo Blanco was born in Santiago Papasquiaro, Earth, the only child to a pair of cultural anthropologists, Drs. Pedro and Maria Blanco. They studied and worked to help preserve many of the cultures of Northern Mexico, of which they both had descended from. Their work in the field of pre-warp/pre-industrial anthropology was so respected that they were often brought in by the Federation on panels involving first contact assessment and Prime Directive violations. As such, Manolo spent a good amount of time away from Earth. It was his time on these Starfleet vessels and facilities where he developed an interest In serving. Opting for enrollment into the Academy as opposed to a primarily academic approach as his parents did.
Strengths & Weaknesses Manolo’s greatest fear in life is not being able to fit in. As a result, Manolo developed an extremely social personality in order to reach out. He is unafraid of engaging in conversation, even if it is subject he is disinterested or unknowledgeable in, just for the sake of fitting in and being accepted amongst those around him. This has led to situations where Manolo has either bitten off more than he can chew, or committed to projects he necessarily had no interest in the first place.

As much as he desires to fit in, Manolo has no problems avoiding those people and groups which he feels he does not fit into. To them, Manolo may seem aloof or distant, or sometimes even like he's making an attempt to ignore them. However, this attitude is more borne out of fear, as opposed to dislike or disinterest.

From a technical standpoint Manolo excels at the more practical applications of engineering, maintenance and repair. He is less so interested in the more theoretical portions of engineering, although he is proficient at the levels expected of a Starfleet Engineer.
Ambitions As mentioned before, Manolo wants to find a place where he fits in. Spending time as a kid on Starfleet vessels, he saw the camaraderie and instantly longed for that sort of connection.

From a career standpoint, it is not much different. He does not want to disappoint and consistently will work overtime, or over commit himself.
Hobbies & Interests Coming in to the Academy, his hobbies were quite limited. He is a "tinkerer", and loves repairing, refurbishing, or building things from scratch. Due to his parents line of work, he also became interested in his heritage, taking up traditional dance and other aspects of peyotism.

In the latter part of his Academy stay, Manolo attempted to branch out in terms of his hobbies. It turned out to be quite an experience for him. Among the hobbies attempted were rock climbing, paragliding, space jumping, and bat’leth combat. After a combined 25 days in sickbay, he decided to take up springball with the help of a Bajoran roommate. Manolo is not very good at it, however, he enjoys the game very much.

Overall, he's starting to learn that there is life outside of building and fixing things and he is attempting to become a little more worldly. He has developed a desire to try new things at least once, even if the attempt fails miserably. (See: targ taming debacle, cliff diving incident, and chess club expulsion). Nonetheless, none of these failures have taken away he new found curiosity.
